The açai palm tree, native to tropical Central and South America, produces a deep purple berry.  The açai berries have long been an important food source for indigenous peoples of the Amazon region, and it is thought to have health-promoting benefits, like most colorful berries.  The word “açai” comes from an Amazon word that means “fruit that cries”.

Acai is used in health supplements today as a superfood, rich in antioxidants, fiber and heart-healthy fats.
