Artichoke

BACKGROUND

Ingredient Type: Botanical, Extract

Also Known As: Cynara scolymus, Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus, Globe artichoke

Artichoke is a plant in the thistle family native to the Mediterranean and can be found in many temperate climates around the world.  Its name may have been derived from the Arabic word al-qarshuf.  Traditionally artichoke was thought to be an aphrodisiac, and during the Middle Ages, it was scandalous for women to eat them.

Artichoke is used in health supplements today to support healthy liver function and for promoting cholesterol metabolism and blood circulation.
