Theobromine

Theobromine is a bitter alkaloid that comes from the cacao plant.  It is found in chocolate and other foods and is similar to caffeine, also a member of the alkaloid family.  Both have positive effects on mood and states of alertness.  Theobromine is derived from the word Theobroma, the name of the genus of the cacao tree, (which itself is made up of the Greek roots theo ("god") and broma ("food"), meaning "food of the gods".  Theobromine is used in health supplements today to enhance mood and energy levels.
