Ingredient Type: Vitamin

Also Known As: Folacin, Folate, B complex vitamin, Vitamin B9

Folic acid is a B vitamin that helps the body produce and maintain new cells.  It is found in leafy green vegetables, fruits, yeast, mushrooms, and organic meat.

Folic acid is used in health supplements today during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects in babies.  It also works with other B vitamins to reduce homocysteine in the blood, which is a risk for cardiovascular disease.

In the meantime see the MedlinePlus entry for folic acid, the Mayo Clinic entry for folate (folic acid), this article on folic acid, this Mayo Clinic article on folic acid and cognitive decline, or the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements entry for folate for more information.
