Pomegranate is a shrub or tree, indigenous to the Middle East, India and Mediterranean.  It bears hard-shelled fruit, red when ripe, that are filled with juicy, edible seeds.  The seeds are rich in phytochemicals such as antioxidant polyphenols and anthocyanins.

Pomegranate is used in health supplements today to provide antioxidants and promote cardiovascular health.
