Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid that is widely distributed in animal tissues.  It is a major constituent of bile and has many fundamental biological roles.  It is essential for cardiovascular function, and development and function of skeletal muscle, the retina, and the central nervous system.  Taurine is also an antioxidant, helping protect the body from harsh environmental factors.  It is primarily consumed in the diet through meat and fish.

Taurine is used in health supplements today for its antioxidant properties.
