BUTTERNUT

BACKGROUND

Ingredient Type: Botanical

Also Known As: Juglans cinerea, White walnut, Lemon walnut

Butternut is a tree that is part of the walnut species.  It is found in the eastern United States and southeast Canada, and its bark is believed to have mild cathartic properties.  It has been traditionally used in place of jalap, a more expensive cathartic, which was imported from Mexico.  During the American Revolution, butternut extract made from the inner bark of the tree was used in an attempt to prevent a variety of disorders, as well as stomach and intestinal discomfort.

Butternut is used in health supplements today for stomach and skin disorders and to support elimination.
