Also Known As: Vitex agnus-castus, Abraham’s balm, Chaste tree, Chasteberry, Hemp tree, Lilac chastetree, Monks’ pepper tree

Vitex is the fruit of the chaste tree, which is native to Central Asia and the Mediterranean region.  It got its name from the belief that it promoted chastity, and it was used by monks in the Middle Ages to decrease sexual desire.

Chasteberry is used in health supplements today to promote hormonal balance in women and to normalize menstrual cycles.

In the meantime see the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health entry for chasteberry, the WebMD entry for Vitex agnus-castus, this European Medicines Agency monograph on Vitex agnus-castus, the Michigan Medicine Health Library entry for vitex, or the RXList entry for chasteberry for more information.
